Hereford
Symphony Orchestra

Herefordshire's only regular adult orchestra

The Hereford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) was founded in September 1958 as Hereford String Orchestra, an advanced strings evening class.

It quickly became established as an independent orchestra, and today it is the only regular adult orchestra in Herefordshire. The HSO has played under several conductors, Richard Coppack, Kenneth Woods, James Slater, Tim Harrison and currently Michael Bell MBE . Today the HSO consists of thirty to forty string players plus a number of of associate wind/brass/percussion players.

The Hereford Symphony Orchestra performs three concerts a year, ranging in size from smaller string based concerts through to full symphonic concerts.

Spring Concert 2024

23 March 2024

Serenades are generally the more lighthearted pieces of the orchestral repertoire. Hereford Symphony Orchestra's Spring Serenade' features three contrasting such works.

  • R. Strauss Serenade in E flat for Wind Op. 7
  • In his Serenade for Wind (that includes horns and double bass), the 17 year old Richard Strauss stated that his 'musical trinity was Mozart (above all), Haydn, and Beethoven. To these were added Schubert, as song-writer’. It is a short, but beautifully crafted and lyrical piece.

  • Dvorak Serenade for Strings in E Major Op. 22
  • Antonin Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings, composed in just twelve days, is one of the glories of the string orchestra repertoire. It is a work of sunny disposition closing in the manner of Dvorak’s much loved Slavonic Dances.

  • Brahms Serenade No. 1 in D Major Op. 11
  • Brahms wrote two serenades, and we perform the first of these today, scored for full orchestra. For Brahms it served as a precursor to the daunting task of composing a symphony. The Serenade No. 1 is a work full of exuberance and joy.
