Herefordshire's only regular adult orchestra

The Hereford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) was founded in September 1958 as Hereford String Orchestra, an advanced strings evening class.

It quickly became established as an independent orchestra, and today it is the only regular adult orchestra in Herefordshire. The HSO has played under several conductors, Richard Coppack, Kenneth Woods, James Slater, Tim Harrison and currently Michael Bell MBE . Today the HSO consists of thirty to forty string players plus a number of of associate wind/brass/percussion players.

The Hereford Symphony Orchestra performs at least three concerts a year with music that has ranged from major symphonic classics by Vaughan Williams, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Brahms, to the film music of John Williams

    Rosie Biss   In addition to her role of Principal cello of Welsh National Opera, Rosie Biss enjoys a busy and varied career as chamber musician, soloist, guest principal, and teacher.   As recitalist and former member of the Zehetmair quartet and trio, the European Music Project and the Scottish Ensemble, Rosie has played throughout Europe and America’s concert halls, broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, WDR 3 and performed at major music festivals including Edinburgh and Aspen.   Busy though the WNO schedule is, playing in the orchestral pit, symphony and chamber concerts, and sometimes in costume and character as part of the opera, Rosie has also guest led the cello sections of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Halle, Bournemouth Symphony, BBC National orchestras of Wales and Scotland, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera and Opera North, and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
